10 Flowers That Last Longer Than a Week

Some flowers are gone in three days. Others stay beautiful for two weeks or more. Know the difference before you order — and make every bouquet count.

Fresh carnation bouquet in a glass vase — one of the longest-lasting cut flowers

Vase life is the thing nobody tells you about when you buy flowers, and it matters more than almost anything else. A £25 bunch of sweet peas might be gone in three days. A £25 bunch of chrysanthemums might still look beautiful in three weeks. The price is the same. The experience is very different.

If you're sending flowers to someone — or buying them for your own home — knowing which varieties last is the single most useful piece of knowledge you can have. Here are ten flowers that consistently outlast the rest.

🌼
Chrysanthemums
The undisputed longevity champions. A well-conditioned mum can last 3–4 weeks in a vase. They're also available year-round and come in every colour imaginable.
🌸
Carnations
Often underestimated, carnations last 2–3 weeks with proper care. They drink water slowly and hold their colour beautifully right to the end.
🌺
Orchids
Cut orchid stems can last 2–3 weeks. Potted orchids, if properly cared for, can rebloom for months — possibly the best long-term flower gift you can give.
🌼
Alstroemeria
Also called Peruvian lily. Expect 2–3 weeks of bloom from a fresh bunch. Each stem produces multiple flowers that open in sequence, so the display keeps renewing itself.
🌸
Gerbera Daisy
Properly conditioned gerberas last 2 weeks. Cut the stems short, keep them in shallow water, and they'll reward you with vivid colour throughout.
🌿
Protea
Exotic, architectural, and astonishingly long-lived. Proteas can last 2–3 weeks cut, and actually dry beautifully if you want them to last even longer.
💜
Statice
The filler flower that never gives up. Statice (sea lavender) lasts weeks in a vase and then dries naturally without losing its colour — practically eternal.
🌸
Lisianthus
Often mistaken for peonies or roses, lisianthus offers 2–3 weeks of vase life with multiple blooms per stem. Exceptional value for money.
🌸
Waxflower
Delicate clusters of tiny blooms that last 2–3 weeks. They dry naturally without wilting, making them one of the most versatile flowers in any arrangement.
🌻
Sunflowers
A properly conditioned sunflower lasts 10–14 days. Keep the vase full, change the water every two days, and they'll stand tall and cheerful for nearly a fortnight.

The ones to enjoy quickly

For balance, here are the beautiful but fleeting: sweet peas (3–5 days), poppies (3–5 days), narcissi (5–7 days), and gardenias (3–5 days). These are flowers to savour intensely, not to buy when you want a two-week display. Their short vase life is not a flaw — it's part of what makes them precious.

Making any flower last longer

Universal vase life tips

  • Cut stems at a 45° angle with a clean, sharp knife — never scissors, which crush the stem
  • Remove all leaves below the waterline to prevent bacterial growth
  • Change the water every two days and re-cut stems each time
  • Keep flowers away from direct sunlight, radiators, and fruit bowls
  • Use the flower food sachet — it genuinely works
  • Cool rooms extend vase life significantly; move flowers away from heat sources at night

The most sustainable flower is the one that lasts the longest. If you're choosing between a lush peony arrangement (5–7 days at its best) and an alstroemeria bunch (2–3 weeks), the alstroemeria delivers more hours of beauty per pound spent. That's not a reason to avoid peonies — it's just a reason to know what you're choosing.
